BRISBANE SOUTHSIDE Chamber of Commerce Newsletter

We are hearing from some of our local businesses that things are tough. The cost of doing business has increased significantly, it’s difficult to find staff and in some instances customer spend is down.

We look forward to the release of today’s State Budget to see what relief or support is on offer for small business, and we will alert you to these once they are announced.

In the meantime, it’s even more important than ever to shop local, support the local community and get involved with your Chamber of Commerce.

As always, we have lots of exciting things in store, and some excellent guest speakers lined up so keep an eye out for your event invitations!

Until next month,

Terri Cooper

President

Reg Walls

I have been a member of Mt Gravatt Bowls Club for 33 years where I have held the voluntary position of Business Manager since 2009. The position involves mainly all aspects of club sponsorship, grant applications, newsletter preparation, oversight of club special events and staff payroll as well as other miscellaneous duties.

The club has recently installed an online booking system for Barefoot Bowls which will allow people to choose the day and time they wish to play, order their food and pay online which means fast and seamless booking. Simply go to the club website and follow the prompts.

On a personal note, as well as playing bowls, I have developed a liking for walking. In earlier times it was not the case due mainly to lack of time to train but I started with the annual Bridge to Brisbane event which I now attend annually. This was followed in 2016 when I walked the Kokoda Track in PNG. Undoubtedly the most physically demanding thing I have done, but nevertheless very rewarding. For a few years now I have undertaken the Remembrance Day walk, originally commencing and finishing at Kedron Wavell RSL, but more recently in the Enoggera Reservoir area. Known as Red Run this is run by Trek2Health, an organisation which raises funds to improve the health of Emergency Services and Veteran Communities. They also organise a Midnight to Dawn Trek which leaves from ANZAC square at midnight on ANZAC Day, along the walkway to Toowong, over Mt Cootha and finishing at The Gap in time for Dawn Service. I have taken part in the last two of these and intend to keep competing whilst I am capable of doing so.

A long time walk on my wish list was the Great Ocean Walk commencing from Apollo Bay and finishing at the Twelve Apostles. I managed to complete that in November 2023 and enjoyed every minute of it. 106 km in 6 days, quite enjoyable with a great group of people.

I still have other walks to do including the Cape to Cape walk in South West Western Australia. This is a total of 135 km completed over 8 days, with two days of the accommodation near Margaret River. There is also a 4 days, 3 Capes walk in South East Tasmania which is somewhere on the bucket list.

Somewhere in all this and the training that goes with it, is time to play bowls. I usually manage two half days a week, usually afternoons.

Anyone interested in playing the sport of lawn bowls, whether it be barefoot bowls or becoming a member should either speak with me or contact the Club.
